   ECLIPSE FUN FACTS!

  • Everyone in the U.S., even in Alaska and Hawaii, will see some part of the Sun eclipsed by the Moon on August 21st. Here in Boca Raton, we are expecting about an 80.4% eclipse!
  • The average speed of the Moon's shadow as it crosses the U.S. is nearly 1,700mph. That's faster than a supersonic jet plane!
  • The Moon is moving away from the Earth at approximately 4cm per year. This means that one day in the distant future, total solar eclipses will no longer be possible!
  • The next solar eclipse that will be visible in the U.S. will be in only 7 short years on April 8th, 2024! It is extremely unusual for eclipses to occur along such a similar path so close together.

PSA: EYE SAFETY DURING A SOLAR ECLIPSE!

It is NEVER safe to look directly at the Sun, except when the sun is entirely blocked during the period of the eclipse known as TOTALITY. Because we will not be experiencing totality here, it will NOT be safe to look directly at the Sun at ANY point during the eclipse. Here at the Explorium, we will provide eclipse glasses (1 pair per family) for safe viewing on a first-come first-serve basis while supplies last.
