Public Science Programs

January - June 2008

The Children’s Science Explorium offers fascinating, interactive exhibits, programs, and camps.

Each is designed to enhance 5 – 12 year old explorers’ understanding of everyday physical sciences.

The Explorium is located inside the Sugar Sand Park Community Center.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR PROGRAMS

Register for programs at the front desk of the Sugar Sand Park Community Center.

Parents must register their own children and show a copy of each child’s birth certificate.

Participants must pre-register at least two (2) days in advance of the chosen program.

Call Sugar Sand Park Community Center at (561) 347-3900 for specific registration dates and information.  Generally, residents may register four (4) weeks in advance; non-residents may register two (2) weeks in advance.

Unless otherwise specified, all programs are:

  • one hour in length.

  • cost $3.00 for residents, $3.45 for non-residents.

  • have a minimum enrollment of five (5) and maximum enrollment of twenty (20).

All children must be checked in and promptly picked up at the end of each program.

January – Arts and Science

Does science influence art? Does art help scientists? Find out for yourself! Discover and create your own scientific art experiments in this four-week series.

Dates:

Ages 5 – 6 (with parent): Tuesdays January 8, 15, 22, 29

Ages 7 – 9: Wednesdays January 9, 16, 23, 30

Ages 10 – 12: Thursdays January 10, 17, 24, 31

Times:

All programs 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Cost:

$30.00 Residents, $34.50 Non-Residents.

February – Cultures and Science

People have always been curious about the world around them. During the first three weeks of February, find out how different cultures have helped all of us understand science as we participate in different experiments and activities.

Dates:

Ages 5 – 6 (with parent): Tuesdays February 5, 12, 19

Ages 7 – 9: Wednesdays February 6, 13, 20

Ages 10 – 12: Thursdays February 7, 14, 21

Times:

All programs 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Cost:

$22.50 Residents, $25.90 Non-Residents.

March – Science in your Favorite Books

Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, and Donald Sobol (Encyclopedia Brown series) have entertained millions of kids. Did you know these authors even managed to slip some science into their stories and poems? Experiment with science and reading this month!

Ages 5 – 6 (with parent): Tuesdays March 4, 11, 18

Ages 7 – 9: Wednesdays March 5, 12, 19

Ages 10 – 12: Thursdays March 6, 13, 20

April – Conservation & Environmental Science

Earth Day is April 22, and the Explorium will help you to celebrate our planet every day with fun experiments and activities in this three-week series.

Dates:

Ages 5 – 6 (with parent): Tuesdays April 15, 22, 29

Ages 7 – 9: Wednesdays April 16, 23, 30

Ages 10 – 12: Thursdays April 17, 24, May 1

Times:

All programs 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

May – Celestial Science

Did you know that every time you look up into the sky, you are looking back in time? Join us as we explore the sun, moon, and stars.

Dates:

Ages 5 – 6 (with parent): Tuesdays May 6, 13, 20

Ages 7 – 9: Wednesdays May 7, 14, 21

Ages 10 – 12: Thursdays, May 8, 15, 22

Times:

All programs 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

WEEKEND PROGRAMS

Boy Scout Badge Workshops

The Children’s Science Explorium is celebrating Boy Scout Day throughout February. Get closer to earning a badge at our Saturday morning workshops while you learn about science and have fun!

All packs must be based within Boca Raton City Limits or the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District.

Space is limited. Call 561-347-3906 for more information and to make reservations.

Cost: $7.50 per scout. Troop leader and two additional chaperones admitted for free.

Girl Scout Badge Workshops

In honor of Girl Scout Day on March 12, the Children’s Science Explorium is hosting Girl Scout workshops on Saturday mornings in March. Learn about science, have fun, and get help earning a badge!

All troops must be based within Boca Raton City Limits or the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District.

Butterfly Garden Restoration

South Florida is the only place in the US where you find at least 15 butterfly species. Help the Children’s Science Explorium provide them with a better habitat!

To celebrate butterfly day, we are restoring our butterfly garden and we need your help.

Dates, Times, and Ages:

Session 1: Scout troops only, age 10 and up

Saturday, March 15, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Session 2: General public, age 10 and up with parent/guardian

Sunday, March 16, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Cost:

Free, but registration is required.

Science for Parents and Kids

April showers bring May flowers… Are you looking for some new rainy day science activities for your kids? Join us as we create gooey concoctions and take home the recipes so you can do the activity on the next gray day!

Dates, Times, and Ages:

Sundays April 6, 13, 20, 27

Ages: 5 and 6, with a parent

All sessions are from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Cost:

$30.00 Resident parent/child pair, $34.50 Non-Resident parent/child pair.

Spa Science

Make some luxurious treats for yourself (or your mom!) in this ahhhh-mazing new program.

Session 1: Ages: 7 – 9

Saturday, May 3, 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.

Session 2: Ages: 10 – 12

Saturday, May 10, 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.

Cost:

Ready, Point, Shoot!

Are you tired of photos that don’t turn out? Join our professional photographer to learn more about the art and science of photography and photo manipulation programs.

Topics covered will be basic photography, file management, photo retouching, color correction, and much more. We may not make you a pro, but you’ll feel like one!

Note: All participants must bring a digital camera to each session, and have access to a computer with photo editing software. During Week 3, the group will meet at the Children’s Science Explorium and will caravan to an offsite location. All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult/guardian. Underwater Photography

Join the Explorium and a professional photographer as we dive into a new realm – shooting underwater! We’ll begin the day at the Children’s Science Explorium before caravanning to Red Reef Park, where you’ll put your newfound knowledge to work while snorkeling.

Program includes disposable underwater camera and entrance to Red Reef Park. Program may be rescheduled due to weather or water conditions. All participants are responsible for bringing their own gear and must know how to swim and have previous snorkeling experience. All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied, including in water, by an adult.

Sunday, June 1, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Ages: 10 – 15, with a parent/guardian.

Cost:

$30.00 Resident minor with one parent/guardian

 Family Ed-Ventures

Where families explore science together… with a little help from the experts!

Kennedy Space Center Outing

Join us for a daytrip to Kennedy Space Center. Fees include round-trip transportation, entrance (including IMAX movies), and Explorium staff-led talks on rockets, US space flight history, the Apollo missions, and the Space Shuttle.

Meals may be purchased at the Visitor’s Center.
