Team up

June through August 2010

Team Up! Explore Science & Sports examines the science of sports through 15 interactive components. Visitors test their skills in sports such as basketball, tennis, soccer, and football while learning about math and physics.

Exhibit Stations:
Ricochet Racquet – Visitors shoot tennis balls at a giant racquet. They adjust the angle of the racquet face. (For guest safety, the racquet is enclosed.)
Locker Room – Guests try on professional sports apparel and equipment.
Balancing Acts – Experiments on balance include a pommel horse, balance beam, and tabletop activities.
Bounce Pass – By determining the correct angle and amount of force, guests bounce a basketball to a “teammate” on the other side of a barrier.
Set Shot – Visitors explore angles, shooting a marble-sized ball through a tiny hoop.
Sweet Spot – Can you find the “sweet spot” in a baseball bat? This exhibit shows how!
Inside Scoop – Discover what is inside different types of balls and how sports equipment is developed.
Get in the Game – In this virtual reality system, visitors can play volleyball, soccer, or ski.
How Fast Was That Pitch? – Guests will learn their top pitching speed. Accuracy counts!
The Sole of the Game – Which shoe goes with which sport?
Twin Spin – Who spins faster, a gymnast in tucked position, or one who is stretched out?
Name That Ball – Using only your sense of touch, guests try to identify sports balls.
Sports Figures – Clips from “ESPN SportsFigures” feature scientific principles in sports.
Designed by the Discovery Center Museum in Rockford, IL, and the Family Museum of Arts and Science as part of the TEAMS Collaborative, this exhibit received funding from the National Science Foundation.
