The Children’s Science Explorium offers fascinating, interactive exhibits, programs, and camps. Each is designed to enhance 5 – 12 year old explorers’ understanding of everyday physical sciences.
The Explorium is located inside the Sugar Sand Park Community Center. Admission is a suggested $2.00 donation per person.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR PROGRAMS:
  • Register for programs at the front desk of the Sugar Sand Park Community Center.
  • Parents must register their own children and show a copy of each child’s birth certificate.
  • Participants must pre-register at least two (2) days in advance of the chosen program
  • Call Sugar Sand Park Community Center at (561) 347-3900 for specific registration dates and information. 

    Generally, residents may register four (4) weeks in advance; non-residents may register two (2) weeks in advance. Residents live within the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Parks District or Boca Raton City Limits. All children must be checked in and promptly picked up at the end of each program.

    January – Toy Time Science
    The Explorium’s newest traveling exhibit, Toy Time, is all about movement through simple machines. We’ll experiment even more with how toys use energy to spin, roll, and jump!
    Dates & Ages:
    K & 1st grade (with parent): Tuesdays, January 12, 19, & 26
    2nd & 3rd grades: Wednesdays, January 13, 20, & 27
    4th – 6th grades: Thursdays, January 14, 21, & 28

    February – Heart Smart
    Pum-PUM. Pum-PUM. That’s the sound of your heart beating. Find out how it works and how you can keep it healthy as we explore the inner-workings of this fascinating organ.  
    Dates & Ages:
    K & 1st grade (with parent): Tuesdays, February 2, 9, & 16 (min. 3; max. 12)
    2nd & 3rd grades: Wednesdays, February 3, 10, & 17 (min. 5, max. 20)

    March – Nano Science
    Some things are so small that we cannot see them with just our eyes! Join us as we explore the big world of little things. We’ll use microscopes to investigate what cells look like and the incredible life that may exist in just a drop of water!

    April – Ecosystems
    On Earth Day we celebrate our blue planet. How much do you really know about it? We’ll explore ecosystems around the world to discover what makes Earth so special and why so many people are trying to protect it.

    2nd & 3rd grades: Wednesdays, April 7, 14, & 21 (min. 5, max. 20)

    May – Team Up! Science
    Science involves making sense of the world around us. We use science everyday – even when we are playing sports. Experiment with and discover how science helps us play better.

    These monthly classes are taught at 1:00 p.m. for ages 6 – 8, and 2:00 p.m. for ages 9 – 12. Participant minimum 5, maximum 20. Call 561-347-3909 for more information on these programs.

    Puppetry Science
    Participating in this fun program won’t leave you with a shadow of a doubt that puppets and science go hand-in-hand! We’ll not only make puppets, but will discover some of the science behind them, and use puppets to learn more about science.

    Musical Science Series
    Move to a new beat as we learn the science of sound and rhythm. Join us as we experiment with making and using instruments.

    Dr. Suess’ Science
    Dr. Seuss has entertained millions of kids. Did you know he’s even managed to slip some science into his stories and poems? Experiment with science and reading this month!

    Ready, Point, Shoot!
    Join a professional photographer to learn more about the art and science of photography and photo manipulation. We may not make you a pro, but you’ll feel like one!
    Note: All participants must bring a digital camera to each session and have access to editing software.

    Underwater Photography
    Join the Explorium and Gumbo Limbo Nature Center as we dive into a new realm – shooting underwater! We’ll begin the day at the Children’s Science Explorium discussing the physics of snorkeling, how shooting underwater is different than shooting on land, and learning how to identify some of the fish we might spy before caravanning to Red Reef Park, where you’ll put your newfound knowledge to work while snorkeling.
    Program includes disposable underwater camera and entrance to Red Reef Park. Program may be rescheduled due to weather or water conditions. All participants are responsible for bringing their own gear and must know how to swim and have previous snorkeling experience. All participants must be accompanied, including in water, by an adult. Please bring brown bag lunches.

    Ages 10 – 15 (with parent/guardian): Sunday, May 23, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (min. 5; max. 12)

    Spa Science
    Make some luxurious treats for yourself (or your mom!) in this ahhhh-mazing program.

    3rd – 5th grades: Sunday, May 9, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. (min. 5, max. 20)

    Recommended for Ages 8+
    Join us for our telescope nights! These free, informal events are held in the parking lot behind the Explorium (weather permitting).
    We’ll explore the skies with our professional-grade 16-inch Meade LX Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.
    All children under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
    No registration required – just show up! The telescope will be out for at least one hour after the scheduled start time. Note: Stars must be visible for the telescope to align.
